Aspire's Mission Statement

ASPIRE is a New York based non-for-profit organization formed in 1986. Since that time ASPIRE has helped children and adults as well as their families learn how to live healthy active lifestyles after loosing a limb or being born without a limb. ASPIRE is funded through charitable donations from those who are supportive of its mission. ASPIRE is run by volunteers whom themselves are living with limb loss.  ASPIRE is a chapter of the Disabled Sports/USA and a member of the Amputee Coalition of America.

As the events/programs director and member of the board I can’t begin to tell you what difference the program has made for so many children and adults. I myself took for granted the great start in life I had until one day my life was suddenly changed in a motorcycle accident that resulted in the amputation of my left leg below the knee.  I thought about all of the things I did as a child and sports was an important role that helped lay the foundation for who I am today, a mother of 2 and world record holder in 12 different events, mentor, teacher and coach.

For a young child or adult with limb loss due to cancer, trauma, birth defects and many other diseases the thought of running, riding a bike, climbing a tree, dancing at a prom or just making a new friend is very difficult.  ASPIRE gives these children and adults experiences such as running, rock-climbing, cycling, horseback riding, triathlons and learning to swim as well as teaching them to give back to the community buy volunteering at different community events like the NYC Marathon.  These are only few of the many different things ASPIRE is involved in as a group.

At the end of the day, the athlete/child, big or small, decides who they want to be not their disability. These experiences help build confidence, friendship and a kind of courage that will stay with them forever.

Unfortunately our organization depends on contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations to continue to provide these experiences for children and adults of all ages who live with limb loss, ASPIRE welcomes any donations and greatly thanks those who already help support ASPIRE.

Sincerely yours,

Amy Palmiero-Winters
